Many people say parenting is the toughest, and most important, job in the world. I agree. A baby is definitely a bundle of joy, but there are times when two hands just arent enough and you need some help in soothing and keeping your baby happy. Thankfully, now there are a number of items that make life easier for parents. Vibrating chairs are one such godsend.

I am all for attachment parenting and do believe that we have too much equipment for babies these days. Entire households seem to be focused on items that allow a parent to get away with little or no physical contact with their little ones. But, at the other end of the spectrum, we have parents (especially Mothers) who are so tired they are ready to drop. There has to be a happy middle path between the two.

One mother stated things very well:

When my second baby came along, I was totally enthralled with attachment parenting. I would carry her around myself and she even slept with us. By the time she was 6 months old, she had made up her mind to be carried around ALL day. And she was such an alert baby that she hardly slept at all. So, much as I hated having to use a piece of equipment to take care of my long-awaited baby, I succumbed due to sheer, bone-deep exhaustion.

I selected a vibrating chair after a lot of research. I had read a whole lot of reviews – some chairs were too bouncy, and many were battery-hogs. I finally went for a beautiful, blue vibrating chair that also converts to a toddler chair. And it was a surprise: the moment I turned it on and adjusted the position, her eyes sort of half-closed, and in a moment, she was sleeping quietly and peacefully! Because she was getting bigger, I was finding it difficult to carry her around, especially when I had to cook, and do my laundry. I could now safely leave her in her vibrating chair while I carried on with my work. I selected a type of chair that has a strap in the front, much like car seats do. This keeps her safe and I dont have to worry about her opening the buckle, or wriggling out. I think what makes this product useful is that its a rocker, a sleeper, and an extra hand – all rolled into one.

The main reason why babies like vibrating chairs is that it gives them an indescribable feeling of safety and familiarity. Babies like movement. This is mostly because they have been moving about in a swimming pool until they came out into the world- a very noisy swimming pool at that! Everything that the mother says and does creates a vibration; such as the sound of her voice, her heartbeat, even her breathing. When the baby comes out, he or she enters a silent, stationary world where things are not very familiar. Recreating that familiar world by moving, rocking or vibrating, calms the baby.

The biggest downside to a vibrating chair is the number of batteries it uses especially if youre using the chair every day. Consider using rechargeable batteries. Theyll cost you less money and are a better choice for the environment.

A vibrating baby chair can never take the place of the love and warmth of a babys parents, but it can help on those days nothing else seems to calm or soothe your baby or when Mom needs some time to cook a meal or take a well deserved break.

Congratulations on the new arrival! Caring for your little bundle of joy is a truly delightful experience, when you want to lavish all your love and attention over this one unique person. Nothing is good enough for your precious baby for whom, if possible, you would even buy the moon!

Naturally, you want the very best for your child, and with the countless baby products flooding the market, this means you can pick and choose to your satisfaction. Moreover, many options are available to the parent of today, and it is upto you to make up your mind about whats best for your child.

Is breast feeding better than the bottle, what brand of baby food is more healthy, or, oh dear, shouldnt the nursery be painted a mild and soothing green instead of all this pink? Should you opt for cloth or disposable diapers? Are you doing the right thing? Help!

Relax. The most important thing when raising a child is to make sure it is healthy. Just as proper nutrition is essential for your babys welfare, so is hygiene and cleanliness. While nutrition can be easily taken care of with regular feedings of milk, hygiene is a different matter. With little or no control over their bodily functions, babies expel a lot of waste, and keeping them clean can be a daunting task. The solution? Nappies, of course!

There are disposable Nappies and cloth nappies. Disposable nappies are easy to use; use it once and throw it away. No washing, no fuss! However, disposable diapers are made of chemicals that can harm your babys sensitive skin. Also, with its synthetic texture, disposable nappies are not comfortable, and babies are prone to develop rashes or allergies. Diapers made from natural fibres are a welcome change from disposable nappies as they are soft and soothing to the skin.

Raising a child also means rising expenses! A baby will go through upto a thousand or more diapers before his first birthday. Disposable diapers cost more than cloth nappies, but in this case, being expensive does not necessarily mean its better. Cloth nappies are lower-priced and are reusable. So, one cloth nappy serves as well as many disposable ones.

To further cut expenses, using second hand cloth nappies is a good idea, and after your baby has outgrown them, it is recommended you donate them to other parents or reuse them for your next child, thereby reducing waste. If one baby will use more than a thousand diapers in a year, imagine the amount of garbage generated in a city from diapers alone! While disposable nappies contain chemicals that do not decompose, discarded cloth nappies are absorbed back into the environment, and are thus very eco-friendly.

In the modern nuclear family where both parents work, washing cloth nappies may seem a tedious process. A gentle wash in the washing machine solves this problem.

Some popular brands of cloth nappies are: the Bumble sized shape nappy, Rainbow Bots and, Prorap All in One Nappies. Terries are flat squares of terry towelling that can be shaped into nappies. These are all nappies that are sized, shaped and have a high second hand value, meaning they are very durable. Almost all brands of cotton nappies are made of light cotton-based material.

Comfort for your baby comes first, and with the menace of harmful chemicals in disposable diapers, cloth nappies seem the only solution. Comfortable, hygienic, eco-friendly, durable . . . with so many merits, it is no wonder cloth nappies are replacing disposable diapers everywhere.

There can be no doubt that cloth nappies are so good for your baby!

What’s in a name? Erwell, everything, really! Of course your little bundle of joy is the sweetest, most beautiful thing you have ever seen and you want to choose a name that reflects his/her individuality, spirituality, uniqueness and all-round special-ness.

But wait a minute!

Remember that the unique baby name you choose will help define junior’s life – how they are viewed and accepted – for many, many years. What sounds cute and original for a 5-year-old, may not sound so funky for a 15-year-oldand what about a 55-year old?

Time was when only celebrities could get away with unique baby names (Zowie Bowie, Dweezil and Moon Unit Zappa, etc), but in the modern world, individuality is more prized than ever before, and increasingly, this starts with our names. Great idea – but don’t allow a flash of a self-indulgence to condemn your child to a lifetime of problems; it’s reported that a Chinese couple named their child “Saddam Sars” to mark the current world events at the time of the birth! I just hope it means something nice in Mandarin, or Cantonese!

This probably wouldn’t have happened in Germany, where names can only be registered if they recognizable, do not ridicule the child and are gender specific. Perhaps there is at least one Chinese child in the world, who will grow up wishing he/she were German!

So – assuming you are not German – what should you do if you want to create a unique baby name, without creating too many problems? Here are some tips and some warnings to make the process less painful:

1.Anagrams: try creating an anagram of an existing name.

2.Father and Mother: try using derivatives of one of the parents’ names, or a combination of both. Alternatively, how does the mother’s maiden name sound as a first name?

3.Telescoping: try dropping letters from another name or a word, until you get a nice-sounding unique baby name.

4.Spelling: an unusual spelling of a common name creates uniqueness. However, remember that your child will be condemned to a lifetime of “that’s David spelt D..A..Y..V..I..D” conversations.

5.Pronunciation: another trick is to pronounce a common name in an unusual way. But this can also lead to a lifetime of corrections and explanations – as well as teasing and accusations of pretentiousness.

6.History: do some research into names that were popular in previous eras, but have become less so.

7.Family History: are there any unusual baby names that can be used to honor family members or ancestors? But beware family politics

8.Nature: many names come from the natural world, particularly flowers (e.g. Rose) and it’s a great source for unique baby names (e.g. Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter Apple).

9.Geography: another useful source of great names – grab an atlas and start searching. David and Victoria Beckham called their first son Brooklyn, which many people think is a cool-sounding name. However, it’s reported that the choice was made because that’s where conception took place. Hmmm, imagine a lifetime in which your name is a constant reminder of your parents having sex! Eeeuuuuww!!!

10.Celebrities: famous people with slightly unusual names are a common source of inspiration. There are lots of teenage “Kylie”s running around the UK since Kylie Minogue’s arrival on the music scene at end of the ’80’s, and her recent resurgence, will have created a second wave of them. And I’m sure many little “Be’yonce”s have been popping up over the last few years. The only problem is that names like these very soon begin to sound a little silly and “wannabe”.

11.Foreign Names: consider using a foreign version of a name, e.g., Pedro, instead of Peter. Or try using a name from a completely different culture.

12.Nicknames: try using a nickname e.g. Angie, instead of Angela or Angelina. However, make sure the name is will pass the “age test” – see number 17 below.

13.Middle Names: a great way to accommodate individuality when naming your baby, is to combine a common first name with a unique second/middle name. The benefit of this is that your child can avoid embarrassment throughout his/her life by ignoring it of keeping it hidden.

14.Initials: when you have settled on some baby names, check that the initials aren’t embarrassing. This is an easy trap to fall into and can lead to a lifetime of misery. “Zina Indigo” are may be nice sounding names for your lovely daughter, but make sure your surname doesn’t begin with “T”!

15.First Name-Surname: check how the selected first name combines with the surname. Make sure the two names do not create some something recognizable, to prevent a lifetime of teasing. Also, check the rhythm of the two names; a different number of syllables in each name usually flows much better. Avoid rhyming the 2 names at all costs or your child will hate you forever!

16.The loudness test: try saying the name softly, at normal pitch and shouting it very loudly. You may be surprised at the results.

17.The age test: try to visualize your child with the name as a baby, as a teenager, as a young adult, a mature adult and as a senior citizen. A name can create completely different perceptions of the individual at separate stages of life.

18.The meaning: the final test of the baby name that you choose should be to check its meaning (if any). Don’t leave your child open to getting a nasty surprise later in life.

Whatever unique baby name you decide, don’t fall into the trap of self-indulgence. Remember, it’s not about you, it’s all about your child. Your grand design to celebrate the uniqueness of this new human being, may eventually lead to a lifelong, desperate desire for conformity and anonymity. Even Zowie Bowie eventually changed his name to “Joey”

Recently, I was at a baby shower for a young friend of mine who is expecting her first child. Most of the attendees were college friends of ours, and almost no one in the room has had a child yet. Needless to say, some of the gifts took some explaining. For many young mothers, some necessities may come as a surprise. In fact many may not know what the phrase “baby layette” means. For those, and for those who just feel like a checklist would make them feel more prepared, here are the basic things that an expectant mother and father should have waiting for the new bundle of joy.

It is important to have between four and six of all of your baby’s basic daily needs. Things like undershirts, sleeping gowns, onesies, footsie pajamas, receiving blankets, hooded towels, socks, washcloths, and daily clothing will be key, since your laundry needs are going to multiply exponentially. You don’t want to be caught in the middle of a load of laundry with a baby who has just spit up his or her lunch on her last clean shirt.

A going home outfit is of great importance, since it is the first time a lot of relatives and friends will see your baby. Not only will there be lots of photos, but there is a lot of sentimentality attached to this particular item. Other individual items to have on hand in the new baby’s nursery are a crib with adjustable settings that can change to meet the needs of your growing (and ever the more clever) baby. You will, for the baby’s bedding need a crib or bassinette with at least two to four crib or bassinette sheets, a crib bumper, and two to three crib blankets. You may want to consider adding a dust ruffle and some waterproof pads for the crib. These are not necessary at first, but you will need them later. A playpen for bringing the new family member along to friend’s houses, family gatherings, or even just to the park or in another room of the house is a convenience that is great for keeping just a little bit of me time in those early months.

While with baby clothes, you should stock up on sizes three to six months (in case the baby is larger than the average newborn, or grows rather quickly), you want to have at least one large box of newborn sized diapers on hand when the baby arrives home. You may want to stock up in the event of a sale, but you don’t want to buy too many, in case the baby is too large for them.

You also want to keep some other essentials in mind for changing/bathing. Two to three bottles of baby shampoo will get you off to a good start, along with a bottle of baby oil, a bottle of baby lotion, baby powder (corn starch is a great bulk alternative), and one tube of zinc oxide for diaper rash. Even if you are breastfeeding, you want to have 6-12 bottles with nipples and collars (and some extra nipples on hand if you are not breastfeeding). These are the absolute basics. It may seem like a lot, but being prepared with these necessities will make your transition into parenting much easier.

You will need to begin gathering the things your baby will need, now that you got the news that you are expecting a bundle of joy. You may feel overwhelmed if this is your first baby with all the decisions that need to be made.

Deciding on the type of stroller you will use for your baby is one of the biggest decisions you will need to make. You need to determine your budget first before you begin choosing from among the many different types of strollers. The cost of strollers can range from $10 to $400 and higher.

The lower end strollers are generally the lightweight umbrella strollers. Easy folding and storage give these strollers an advantage. High prices for a stroller could indicate greater quality and better features. You should know which of the variety of features that come with strollers is important to you?

Which would you want a convertible travel system or a stroller and a car seat? A travel system has a stay in the car base, a stroller frame to which the infant carrier/ car safety seat is attached. These are wonderful especially for your newborn baby.

A play tray that has places for a bottle or juice cup come with strollers. Many strollers come with canopies that have vinyl windows to let you keep an eye on the baby. Easily applied foot brakes that are attached to both rear wheels and a wrist strap brake that can be used together are included on most strollers.

While you have the strap on it gives you extra safety while you are stopped because the stroller can’t roll away. Strollers are now coming with a parent tray that fits over the handle bar as well as a large storage basket that fits under the seat(s). It has a holder for a cup of coffee or a soda, your cell phone, snack, and your keys.

Reversible handlebars that can be moved from front to rear or vice versa and are height adjustable are now on most strollers. The reversible handlebars can help you to see your baby while he rides if necessary and the height adjustable feature is a great back saver.

Next to be considered is the seat. Will the seat recline enough, if it reclines, to allow your newborn to lie almost flat? Will the seat be comfortable for your baby and well padded? Can the seat padding be removed so it can be washed? Blankets that can be attached with snaps to the seat come on most upper end strollers

Your baby’s stroller becomes like a bunting on wheels with these blankets. Your baby is protected from wind and harsh sunlight with the use of these detachable rain hoods. Another twist comes with your decision about a baby stroller. You can have for free a stroller that is almost brand new from your friend. She promises to get the stroller ready for you and cleaned.

Is it a safe choice for your baby to have a used stroller? Before you place your baby in it you will need to look over some things and it could be a very good choice for you and your baby. No gaps, dents, or cracks should be found in the frame. Bolts and screws must all be in place.

If it were anything less your baby could be seriously hurt in an accident. Are there any sharp spots on the frame? Can your baby be cut by screws sticking out or are there loose screws? Is the frame and handle bar properly joined?

Do you need to look over the wheels for leaks in air pressure or are they solid?

The wheels; are they worn?

Do the wheels need replacement?

Are the wheels turning appropriately?

Are the axels crooked?

Are the brakes holding when applied and working properly?

No matter if the seat is in straight us position or reclining position, does the seat hold?

Your baby could be seriously hurt if the seat does not hold the position well. Is the seat lining fitting the frame properly and is it clean? Strollers have a variety of options, types, and styles. Multi-seated strollers are available for two children or more.

There is a variety of seating arrangements including tandem and side by seating as well as stadium seating which a variation of tandem seating where the rear seat is higher than the front allowing the second child to see more than just the back of a head.

Jogging strollers have a triangular wheelbase with one large one out in front and two in the rear. Jogging strollers also come with multiple seating. Used or new enjoy your outings with your baby or children.

When you brought your little bundle of joy home from the hospital, no one told you how much lighter your wallet was about to become. Between diapers, formula, clothes, and toys, it is amazing how something to small can cost so much. Take advantage of the following tips to help you save money on the things you buy for your baby.

Order things online and take advantage of coupon codes. Lets face it, your baby needs a lot of accessories and that can add up to big bucks, but you can save substantially by shopping online. Buying things online for your baby has lots of advantages. With literally millions of products to choose from, shopping on the internet can give you options for items that your local store doesnt carry. Many sites offer free shipping and often you dont have to pay tax on your online purchase which means that you could conceivably get an item online for less money than it would cost you to buy it in the store. Many retailers sell things cheaper online than they do in their physical store, in hopes of tapping into the internet market. The best secret to saving money online is online coupon codes. Upon checkout, you simply input a code when prompted and the amount of the coupon will automatically be deducted of the total of your purchase. If you use a coupon code for 20 % off of an item that can add up to huge savings if you are purchasing something big like a crib or a stroller.

Use coupons when you shop in retail stores. Coupons arent just for groceries. Watch the paper for specific store coupons and save tons of money on purchases like bed linens car seats, strollers, and toys. Many retailers print coupons in their Sunday flier, so scan them closely and watch the savings add up. Often these coupons are for a percentage off your purchase, rather than for specific products, so you can save a lot of money if you use if for a big purchase like furniture. Dont forget to check online for printable coupons from your favorite stores. It is always a bonus to find a coupon for a store you planned to shop at anyway.

Dont wait for coupons to come to you. You dont have to rely solely on the Sunday paper for baby related coupons. Write to the manufacturers of the products you use and tell them what you like about their products. You will be surprised at the amount of coupons they will usually send you. Often they will even send you vouchers for free products. Dont just write to the manufacturers of products like baby food or formula. Contact companies that sell diapers, lotions, shampoos, baby wipes, or toys. Look in your pantry, your bathroom cupboard, and your babys room and make a list of all the products you buy for your baby. Then write to those companies and soon you will be saving a fortune on products you already know and love. You can also call the toll free number on the back of the products you use and ask the operator if they have any coupons available. Manufacturers love to give coupons because if they give you a coupon, they know you will buy their product. Most people never think to ask, so all of those coupons just sit there unused.

Babies need so many things and all of those things add up to a lot of money. Use coupons to cut your expenses everywhere you can. It pays to save as much money as possible now, because before you know it, your little darling will grow up and it will be time to start thinking about college tuition.

A new bundle of joy has just entered into your best friends world, and you want to find the perfect present for the perfect baby. If you walk into any department store you will be overwhelmed by all of the options, and may want to purchase the whole store. But take a step back and think what you would like if you just had your first baby.

Classic

Simple Presents are always the best. A memorable gift like a babys first china bowl and plate, there are many memorable designs such as Beatrix Potter, by Royal Doulton. This classic present never goes out of style, and is something everyone will cherish for a lifetime. In fact, many people pass these precious dishes down from family member to family member for generations to come.

A Basket Full of Practicality
A basket full of necessities for the baby will always come in handy for the new mom from wet nappies to baby spoons, and blankets. A simple basket of baby goods, is a practical way to welcome a new born into this world, and will save mom a few trips to the grocery store.

Sleepers in Different Sizes

If mom needs one thing for her new baby its sleepers in various sizes. Babys grow quickly and do not remain in their infant size clothing for too long. They are always in need of new sleepers; and if there is one thing babys like to do in their early beginnings it is to sleep. Sleepers are the perfect present for any mom who knows she will have a fast growing baby, and no time to sleep.

Gifts from the Warmth of Your Heart

A gift of homemade goodies, is always a great baby gift for new moms, no mother wants to cook after they have just given birth and been released from the hospital. A homemade casserole is the perfect way to show you care, and is a fantastic present for the sleep deprived mom who no longer has time to comb her hair.

The Gift of Time

Another fantastic baby gift is the gift of time. Lets give mom a break and it is always appreciated and welcome, both she and dad to be would be elated to have a couple of hours of time to get away. Plus, you get to spend some alone time with a new bundle of joy, and bond with its delightful smile.

All that Matters is You Care

Baby gifts dont need to be expensive or luxurious but they should show you care; and a little thought goes a long way in finding the perfect baby gift. New moms will appreciate the time you took in spending to find, or create the perfect gift for the new loved one in their life.

Finding the perfect gift, is easy all you need, is little imagination, a little creativity, and a little use of your own time. To welcome the newest edition into your friends or families life; an original baby gift will show how much you truly care.

Since she’s been there, done that, what do you get a veteran mom with a new baby?

According to Kids II, one of the fastest-growing infant toy companies in America, selecting baby gifts for second-time-around parents can be as simple as A-B-C.

* A is for age gap. Consider whether the latest bundle of joy is far or close in age to siblings. Moms with two children under 2 might appreciate a second helping of necessities such as monitors, car seats or diaper disposals.

Second babies are a welcome opportunity for duplicates of essentials like bouncers, play gyms or swings. Moms will appreciate not having to move gear from room to room or floor to floor as they move their babies to where their toddler siblings may be playing.

If the age gap is bigger, think about items parents might need for an older child, such as booster chairs, rails or bedding for big boy/girl beds, or perhaps a new convertible car seat.

* B is for better features. To keep up with an evolving market, toy designers and manufacturers often incorporate new features and technologies into their products, providing new twists to classic favorites.

For example, the Bright Starts “Around We Go!” activity station takes play to a new level by incorporating a seat that safely moves around the outside of the table. Named one of Dr. Toy’s Top Ten Toys of 2005 and a recipient of the National Parenting Seal of Approval, this innovative toy features an electric piano, drawing station and removable dishwasher-safe snack tray. Parents love the open design, which provides room for siblings to share in activities.

* C is for clean slate. Hand-me-downs are great for clothes, but not for personal items such as pacifiers, teethers and stroller/car seat toys, which tend to spend more time on the floor than in little hands and mouths.

When buying teethers, make sure they are soft, durable, easy for a baby to hold and easy to clean. Mom will appreciate replacement of much-loved items such as rattles, play keys and toy phones, while baby will enjoy having something fun and new to sink his teeth into.

Also, consider other items that get used over and over, like sleepers, undershirts, hooded towels, burp cloths and washcloths.

You have just learned that you are expecting a bundle of joy and now you need to begin getting the things your baby will need. If this is your first baby all the decisions you need to make may seem overwhelming at first.
One of the biggest purchases you will need to make is about the type of stroller you will use for your baby.

There are so many different types of strollers to choose from and one of the first things you need to do is determine your budget. There are strollers that can cost as little as $10.00 or as much as $400 and up. The lower end strollers are generally the very light weight umbrella strollers. The advantage to these strollers is the fold nicely and can store almost anywhere. As the price gets higher the features and quality of the stroller may increase.

Strollers can come with a variety of features. What is important to you? Do you want a convertible travel system or a stroller that is just that and a car seat? There are travel systems that include a stay in the car base, an infant carrier/car safety seat, and a stroller frame for the infant seat which it is attached. These are great especially when your baby is newly born.

Strollers have a play tray that has insets for a bottle or juice cup. Many have canopies with a vinyl window so you can keep an eye on the baby. The brake on most strollers now are attached to both rear wheels and is easily applied with your foot and some also have a wrist strap brake that is used in conjunction with the foot break. It gives extra safety when you are stopped and the stroller won’t ‘roll away’ while you have the strap.

There is usually a large storage basket under the seat(s) of the strollers and many strollers now are coming with a parent tray that is place over the handle bar. It has a spot for a cup of coffee or a soda, a place for your cell phone, your keys and a place to hold a snack.

Handlebars are now height adjustable on most strollers and are reversible moving from either the front to back or vice versa. The height adjustable feature is a great saver on the back the reversible handle can help you see your baby while he rides if necessary.

The seat is the next consideration. Does the seat recline and if so will it recline enough so that your newborn can lie almost flat? Is the seat well padded and will it be comfortable for your baby? Is the seat padding removable for washing?

Most upper end strollers come with blankets that can attach to the seat with snaps. These blankets make your baby’s stroller like a bunting on wheels. Rain hoods are also detachable and can be used to protect your baby from harsh sunlight and winds.

Here’s another twist your decision about a baby stroller. Your friend has an almost brand new stroller that you can have for free. She agrees to have it cleaned and ready for you. Is a used baby stroller a safe choice for your baby? It can be a very good choice for you and your baby, however there are some things you really need to look over before you place your precious one in it.

The frame – there should be no dents, cracks, or gaps in the frame. All bolts and screws must be in place. Anything less could cause an accident and seriously hurt your baby. Are there sharp spots on the frame? Are there any screws loose or sticking out that could cut your baby? Is the handle bar joined properly to the frame?

The wheels – are they solid or do you need to look for leaks in air pressure in them? Are the wheels worn? Do they need replacing? Do the wheels turn, as they should? Are the axels straight? Does the brake operate properly; that is, do they hold when applied?

The seat – does the seat hold its position whether straight or in the reclining position? A seat that does not hold the position well could seriously injure your baby. Is the lining clean or does it fit the frame properly.

There are all kinds of options styles and types of strollers. There are multiple seat strollers for twins, or more children. There are a variety of seating arrangements side by side seating, tandem seating with one seat behind the other, and stadium seating (tandem seating with rear seat raised above the front) allowing the second child to be able to see more than the back of a head. There are jogging strollers (one wheel out in front and two rear wheels). The jogging strollers also come with multiple seating.

Used or new enjoy your outings with your baby or children.
