How Baby Monitors Work

Posted by admin

One of the favorite things for parents to do is watching their beautiful baby as he or she is peacefully sleeping. Parents do this partly to make sure they are seeing the gentle rise and fall of their chest that indicates everything is okay. Its natural for parents to worry about their babies. After putting a baby in his or her bed for a nap or for the evening, parents often come back to check, double-check, and then check on the baby again to make sure everything is okay and for their peace of mind. But, with the many high quality baby monitors available, parents now can have a set of ears in their babys room the entire time their baby is asleep which brings extra peace of mind and comfort to busy parents.

A baby monitor is actually a radio transmitter that allows you to listen in on your little one at all times of the day and night. Monitors are compact, two-part gadgets. There is a transmitter that is placed near the sleeping baby (but well out of reach of the baby) and a receiver that the parents keep near them. The receiver will amplify any noise your baby makes.

Reception-range and designs vary. Some allow you to speak softly to your baby through an intercom; others have built in cameras so you can not only hear your baby but see him or her as well. Some monitors show sounds via a light display so you can monitor your baby even when the volume is turned off. In addition, some models have an optional sensor pad that monitors your babys breathing, and sounds an alarm if no movement is detected.

Baby monitors are very useful. Anytime your baby gets up from sleep, whether it is because he or she is hungry, need to be changed, or is just ready for comfort and interaction from you, a baby monitor lets you know instantly that your baby is starting to wake up or is awake. The biggest advantage of a baby monitor is that it offers parents an added element of safety and security. Parents can cook a meal, do laundry, or any of the 1,001 things that need to be done at home without having to worry about their baby. They can even step outside on to the patio to take in some sunshine and take a break without having to worry about whether or not theyll hear their baby when he or she wakes up. When your baby is peacefully asleep, you know he or she is totally safe because your baby monitor will alert you the moment your little one needs you. According to one Mom in San Francisco, My listening unit is the most important device at home. I dont go anywhere without it.

Even though baby monitors are wonderful devices and seem indispensable, they have their shortcomings. Interference from cordless phones and concrete walls sometimes sets off a false alarm, which means that you may be hearing things that are not there. Some monitors pick up transmissions from other baby monitors that are nearby and give you a minor heart attack while you rush to your babys side.

Important features to look for in a baby monitor:

- Compactness: A compact model is lightweight and easy to carry around.

- Sound-activated light: Sometimes, other children may accidentally turn the volume off. Alternatively, if you are watching TV or talking on the phone you may miss your babys cries if this feature is not present.

- Low-battery warning: If your batteries are low on life, you may not hear your baby.

- Right bandwidth: Some high-end models offer a wide bandwidth for better clarity.

- Video display this is a great feature although its not necessary and adds to the cost of the baby monitor. But its great to be able to see an image of your baby along with being able to hear him or her.

Children of the 21st century

Posted by admin

The good old days as I remember them were just that, the good old days.
Children of the 21st century

Playing hopscotch hide and seek even a game of rounders was all in a day’s fun for a thirteen year old in the good old days. Of course all good things come to an end when called in against your will and ordered up the stairs to wash behind your ears before bed, while the children of the 21st century slap on war paint to disguise their identities for approval into many disco night clubs. .

Succeeding in their mission to gain those added years they would then dance and party till dawn, while I remember back to my navy blue knickers and white vest hanging up to dry in front of an open coal fire for school the next morning.

The nature and attitude of the Children of the 21st century is so different from the days long gone. Children today have a lifestyle not a childhood, whose fault is that I ask. Where do the answers lie?

Remembering back to the words of Mother in the good old days, “There is your dinner”! Now it is “what you would like for dinner”? Another household saying of Mum’s was “I can not afford that”. Twenty first century mums can by doing an extra shift at work.

And in the in the good old days the threats cast upon us from Mother, threats like, are you looking for a good hiding, No I was not looking for a good hiding, but you never dared to answer back unless of course you were looking for another clout. Nowadays it is the other way round, where a great many Mothers live under threat from their own flesh and blood.

“Where do the answers lie” I ask myself once again.

Drinking was strictly for the adults in the good old days not for teens on the street corner who are not long out of nappies. Drugs in the good old days were prescribed by a Doctor not a dealer, the only dealer we knew of in those days were the ones who dealt the cards in a game of snap.

Will the Children of the 21st Century ever learn? Yes given the right teacher, that being Mummy and Daddy, then as your star pupil begins to grow up he learns to respect his/her elders, that now being Mum or Dad.

Giving into your children’s needs and wants is not helping them for the big bad world out there, teach them to stand on their own two feet and if that means going back to the good old days then so be it. Which isn’t so bad just to hear the laughter of children growing up in their own time.

I think we all know where the answer lie for why the Children of the 21st century don’t laugh any more.

Children And Their Puppets

Posted by admin

Definition tells us a puppet is a small figure of a person operated from above with strings by a puppeteer. Ironically, a person who is controlled by others and is used to perform unpleasant or dishonest tasks for someone is also referred to as a puppet.

Puppets: The Finest Dolls
Puppets are finest because they can be played with so little effort unlike the battery operated dolls. Although playing puppets doesnt let you watch them, playing them in itself is a great fun. Puppets are used to depicting various mythological stories over the ages regardless of where you are.

Why Children Love To Play Puppets
Wide range of toys enhances imaginative experiences of children. Innovatively built, stuffed toys can be used to show your baby how to brush her teeth, how to wash hands etc. Children are highly imaginative; buy them a puppet or two, they very soon get to learn their mechanisms. Although they like it, they invariably end up tearing the puppets apart! Teach him make a puppet at home.

Making a Puppet At Home
Making a puppet at home may not save you money, but children love a home grown puppet endless. Their imaginations start flying while you are at work with your puppet. They start off on a fantasy trip imagining stories and characters they have heard. Well here is how you make a puppet at home.
Materials you require: You dont need more than a couple of wooden spoons, color brush and ribbon, scissors, cardboard and paint. Dont forget the glue.

Making it: Choose the favorite animal of your child to begin with. You need not be altruistic about choice of colors. Choose a pleasant color to wash the cardboard and the spoons with. Cutout two ears from the cardboard and glue them onto the spoons after embellishing. Paint the face, eyes, nose and mouth. Finish it with colorful ribbons around its neck tied like your child wanted.

The easiest you can make at home is a doll with a hollow head of a person or animal and a cloth body; which fits over your hand and manipulated with the fingers.

This is not to discourage buying of puppets. Instead you have the freedom to choose from 1000s of varieties plus the mechanized varieties. Not to mention the thrill you give your child wandering through the toy store.

The role of parent necessitates the making of many momentous decisions for a beloved person who does not yet have the capability to choose for his or herself. Parenthood is perhaps the most blessed and joyous responsibility of all, as it is fuelled by love and hope for all that may be possible in the future. As parents, we try to give our children the very best of everything, from food and clothing, to education and other opportunities that might expand the worldview of those we love best. But some would argue that the gifts we give our children begin in a way that is at once both smaller and larger, a way that is both subtle and far-reaching. One of the first gifts we give our child is the name we bequeath to them.

Children learn very early to associate their given name with themselves. It is how their parents address them, how they learn to distinguish themselves from others as they proceed into the world. The name we bestow upon our newborn baby is so much more than a collection of alphabet characters it becomes representative of everything we are.

A babys name is a combination of letters and sounds that join together to create the single word we will use to evoke all that we hope our child will become. We have all had the experience of enjoying certain words more than others, of finding that certain sounds resound harshly in our ears. Language is the dividing line between our animal counterparts and ourselves, and is a powerful tool, and so it is important to bear in mind when choosing a name for your baby.

We also invest names with individual meanings, we personalise them to our own situation. They can remind us of relatives or friends, and the characteristics that these loved ones displayed. They can have unconscious or inexplicable connotations, and speak to us positively or negatively with the echo of old associations long since pushed from our awareness.

A childs name should be chosen with great care. A name should be a thing of empowerment, as it carries within the precious burden of identity. A childs experience of his or her name comes largely from parental suggestion, so be sure to choose a name for your baby that is filled with characteristics you admire. Whether or not you believe in such things as numerology or the Kabalarian philosophy, your childs name will undoubtedly be a force in their life. Think deeply, and choose well.

And To All A Goodnight!

Posted by admin

You’ve just spent a good part of the evening preparing your baby for bed. As she falls asleep in your arms you tenderly place her in her cot; her eyes flash open and she screams the house down. So you lift her and start all over again!

One of the most frustrating things about having a baby who refuses to sleep in her cot is that you know she is exhausted – because you are also exhausted.

So is there a panacea for this timeless problem?

Routine is a great teacher. But getting into one is not so easy. It takes time and perseverance on your part. But at the end of the day it makes for a happy family.

Try to have a set bedtime. As it approaches, watch for signs that your baby is getting tired. She may cry for a prolonged period and only settle when you lift her. Or she may rub her eyes or pull at her ears. Try to notice such signs, because if she gets over-tired it will become more difficult to settle her.

A warm bath can be a wonderful way to prepare baby for sleep. You may like to try adding a few drops of essential lavender oil as it is renowned for its relaxing properties. Or add some specially formulated sleepy baby bubble bath.

Avoid playing with the baby during her bedtime bath. You do not want to get her excited as this will have the opposite effect to that intended! Simply trickle some warm bath water over her as she lies in the bath.

After bathing, many babies are very receptive to a baby massage. Play some soft music as you massage her.

You can give a dry massage, without oil, or an oily massage using extra virgin olive oil. If you do intend using any oil place a small amount of it on her inside arm and leave for about ten minutes. Check to ensure there has been no reaction before massaging her.

If she is fine, rub a small amount of oil, about the size of a ten pence coin, into your hands. This will warm the oil and not shock the baby! Do not rush the massage. Keep it slow. She will let you know if she is not happy. If this is the case, end the session. Try again the following night.

There are lots of good baby massage books available which show you a variety of massage techniques. And many organisations run free courses. Ask your health visitor to keep you informed.

After her massage, give baby a cuddle and dress her for bed. Keep your movements slow. This will ensure she stays calm.
Some babies enjoy a feed before sleeping, so you may like to feed her after her bath. If she is breastfed she may fall asleep on the breast. It is best to waken her before placing her in her cot as babies can get frightened if they awaken in different surroundings to those in which they fell asleep.

New parents, and even experienced parents, can often be indecisive about what is required for the baby to settle in her cot. Should baby go to sleep in the dark? Or should you leave a light on? Should you play music? Or is silence better?

For many parents the solution is to leave a small, dim, night-light on so that baby will not be frightened if she awakens later on. It is also a good idea to play a soothing lullaby CD and leave it playing quietly on repeat. Play the same CD every night and baby will begin to look forward to bedtime! Babies love repetition. It makes them feel secure.

Babies are never too young for a bedtime story or a lullaby. And many babies have a favourite bedtime story that they like to hear every night before sleeping.

If your baby gets upset when you place her in the cot, stay with her for a few moments. Tell her firmly that it is bedtime and say goodnight. Leave the room, but stay nearby. Allow her to cry for around thirty seconds. Return to the room and again say goodnight. Do not chat! If she is standing up, lie her down. She will probably scramble straight back onto her feet! Leave the room again.

Each time wait slightly longer before returning. It can be a good idea to move around nearby, but not in the same room, and allow baby to hear that you are nearby. You may like to hum a tune or chat to your partner. Avoid keeping the whole house silent. Babies need to learn to sleep through some noise.

If baby gets very distressed, simply return to her and comfort her with a little hug. And then lie her down. It can be incredibly difficult to refrain from lifting her. But be assured that eventually she will fall asleep.

Within two or three nights most babies stop protesting and have learnt what bedtime means. Many happily lie down and fall straight to sleep once the routine is established. As a result your baby will be happier and so too will your family!

Goodnight!
