Once you have made the difficult decision to turn to a surrogate mother to help you have a family, it can be hard to know what to do next. You will have spent a long time considering the emotional implications on yourself and all the other people involved, but now you may be unsure about the practicalities of surrogacy.

The first thing to decide, with a medical professional, is what type of surragacy you will need. For instance, artificial insemination is an option for couples in which the woman has lost, or never had enough, egg cells.

The surrogate mother is artificially inseminated with sperm from the male partner. The child will therefore by genetically related to the surrogate mother and the male partner. In order for the intended mother to be legally recognised as a parent of the child she will have to adopt the baby once it is born.

It is highly important to sign a legal agreement with the surrogate, saying that she will give the baby to the intended parents. Sometimes, the intended parents agree to give the surrogate visitation rights but all these details should be arranged before the birth.

Another surrogacy option available, depending on the cause of infertility, is gestational surrogacy. This technique combines the sperm and egg cells from the intended parents in the hope of creating an embryo in the same way that IVF does. The embryo or embryos are then transferred to the surrogate womb.

Whichever method you use, the choice of surrogate mother will be a difficult, but also exciting, decision. Some couples have a surrogate in mind, such as a close friend or family member.

Such independant arrangements have the benefits of a greater level of understanding between the planned parents and the surrogate, and an oppertunity for the surrogate to stay in touch with the child. It is also considerably cheaper than going through an agency.

However, remember that you will need to stick to the same legal protocal as you would with a stranger. The contract should still be drawn up by attornies representing both parties.

The person you choose and their partner will have to undergo medical testing, and you should agree any behaivor modifications before hand. You should be prepared for your relationship with the person to change during the pregnancy and after the child is born.

A surrogacy agency is another solution. Whilst it may feel odd involving a stranger in such a personal experience, it is reassuring to know that the women involved have volenteered to help people like you, and have undergone vigorous checks.

A good agency will keep you informed through all the stages of your application. You will have to give detailed information on your medical and psychological history but so will your potential surrogate. Experienced co-ordiators will find a surrogate whose situation is compatible with your needs.

As your nearest specialist centre may be a long way away, the internet is a good tool for preparing in advance of your application and meetings with potential candidates. Things to check out include: what the centre requires from a surrogate (in terms of health, age, previous births and psycological profile), what legal issues you need to think about and how much the whole experience will cost.

Think long and study hard to find out what is best for you, and you will have prepared yourself for a successful surrogate pregnancy.

It’s often a challenge to decide just who to invite to your baby shower. What is the proper etiquette and how do you avoid hurting someone’s feelings?

When determining your guest list, it’s important to define your target group. Is it your idea to host the traditional women only gathering or will you include children? Today it’s becoming increasingly popular to invite couples and/or complete families.

When you decide on the type of shower you are going to be hosting make sure your invitations are precisely worded, such as “women only”, “children welcome” and so on based on your decision. If you are planning a specific theme make sure this is included on your invitations as well as any special instructions such as what to bring, how to dress, and directions to the party location. This will save you countless telephone inquiries regarding the specifics of your shower plans.

Always ask your invited guests to RSVP and keep in mind that typically about 20-25% of those confirming will ultimately fail to attend for a variety of reasons.

Baby Showers held at an office, social club or church have a pre-determined guest list of co-workers, club members or fellow church members but make sure that you find out if your shower is the only one being held for the mom to be. If it is, then you may want to extend invitations to her personal friends and family. It may take a bit of discreet probing to find out if there are additional showers planned.

Alternatively, if you are a friend or family member planning the only shower, it’s a thoughtful idea to make a call to the prospective mother to be’s employer to find out who should be invited from her workplace.

In most cases her husband should be able to supply contact information for her friends and work associates.

Don’t forget that if your shower is the sole party planned, you should extend invites to the mom’s family as well as her husband’s family.

Need to buy or create the picture of a baby footprint?

To be blessed with a little baby boy or baby girl is a miracle. It doesnt matter whether it is your first child or number five, it is still a fantastic feeling to hold that little human in your arm.

Some point in time you might want to share this special feeling with family and friends and you are therefore thinking of having a party to celebrate. It doesnt have to be a special occasion for inviting family over to show them their new family member.

When inviting you can naturally get on the phone and call them. It is fast but not very creative and surely it is not a thing theyll remember for the time to come.

Another route that you could take was to create an invitation for this party or get-together. To decorate this invitation what would be better than to actually make them unique and personalized by your baby. That would surely be a memory to keep for the grandparents.

A picture of a baby footprint would be a unique and personal way to decorate the invitation. But why stop there? You could easily apply that to lots of other things. Put a footprint on a cup, the plate, the candles etc. Only the imagination sets the limits.

Now you might think that it is easier said than done and that is true. But that doesnt mean that it is hard to create a picture of a baby footprint. It is actually quite easy to do when you know what to keep in mind before you start the process.

If youre not a creative person or you done feel that you have the time to do the unique pictures or baby prints youre in luck. More and more sites around the internet and in local stores sells pre-made decorations and invitations.

While they still look great and cute and are still affordable they are not unique and your friends and relative will surely not keep them as a memory of the party you held for your newly born child.

So whether you go one route or the other is up to you but if you choose to create your own unique invitations and/or decorations then make sure that you think the whole process through. Even though it is a simple process there are still a lot of things to consider when creating a picture of a baby footprint.

Saving your baby’s umbilical cord blood allows it to be cryogenically stored, and then available if your child later becomes sick and needs a bone marrow transplant. Umbilical cord blood was discarded until the 1970’s, when researchers discovered that umbilical cord blood could save lives under certain circumstances. How do you decide on cord blood banking? Many soon-to-be parents ask this very question. Here are some things to consider when deciding on whether or not to bank your baby’s umbilical cord blood.

This type of transplant would be ‘autologous’ and is different than the more common ‘allogenic’ transplants that might be done from a sibling or other relative or an unrelated donor. Our own blood is the best choice for a transplant.

Often times, cord blood banking can save a baby’s life. But still, there are many other factors to consider. Price seems to be the number one roadblock, with the complete cost being around $3,000. So, you should certainly not feel guilty if you cannot bank your child’s cord blood. Should you even consider cord blood banking? That part will be up to you.

However, if you already have a child or family member that has a condition that can be treated with a stem cell transplant (such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia, aplastic anemia, leukemia, metabolic storage disorders and certain genetic immunodeficiencies), then you defenitely should consider banking your child’s umbilical cord blood. However, the average baby without risk factors has a very low chance of ever needing his or her cord blood.

On the other hand, some doctors and researchers support saving umbilical cord blood as a source of blood-forming stem cells in every delivery. This is mainly because of the promise that stem-cell research holds for the future. The majority of people would have little use for stem cells now, but research into the use of stem cells for treatment of disease is ongoing – and the future looks promising.

You may also want to donate your baby’s cord blood. This is possible through non-profit cord blood banks that use it for research or to save the life of another child.

Overall, cord blood banking looks to have a promising future. It’s defenitely an option you should look into. After you’ve studied the facts and your family history, you should be able to make a much more informed decision on what’s right for you.

Once you have decided that it is time to move your child to a toddler bed how you go about doing it is very important. This is a big change for a child and can be very stressful. Here are some ideas and tips that will hopefully help you to make it as painless as possible for your toddler.

If at all possible allow your child to be involved in the decision to move into the new bed and to help pick it out. If you already have the bed and purchasing a new one is not an option then consider letting your child pick out new sheets and covers for it. This will make it more their bed in their mind and make the change more positive for them.

Once you have the toddler bed set it up in the child’s room for several weeks before you actually move them into it. This will give them an opportunity to get used to it so it will not seem so new. If you need to you can even start having the child get into the toddler bed each night as part of the bed time routine and lay in it for a little while. Maybe while you read them a story, and then move into their crib when to actually sleep. Move everything possible from the crib into the toddler bed to reduce the actual amount of change. You can try having them take their day time naps in the bed but still sleep in their crib at night. When you are actually ready to start using the toddler bed full time you should take down the crib and move the toddler bed into the same location in the room to ease the transition.

Patience is the order of the day especially if your child is reluctant to give up their crib. Some children take to their new big boy or big girl bed without any qualms but for many it is a very trying change. Try to avoid doing it at the same time there are any other changes happening in your toddlers life. If they are just starting potty training, changing day cares or the addition of a new family member.

No matter what you do your child may just not be ready for this change in which case you just need to be patient and wait a few months and try it again.

Discount Baby Shower Supplies: Planning A Shower On A Budget

Baby showers are a special occasion where friends, family and other people who know the parents to be, are gathered together to give gifts and make this occasion memorable to everyone present.

The one who will host this event is usually a very close friend of the future mother. Such events are mainly for gift giving which make it awkward for a family member of the mother to be the host for such an event. That person needs to start by talking to the mother and other members of the family what kind of theme will be appropriate for the party.

The host can do the planning alone or brainstorm with friends in picking the right invitation then having it made by the printers. When that is finished, the other details after that should already be quite easy such as the food for the occasion, and the program for the party.

The party is determined on the gender of the baby and the supplies for the occasion depend on the theme of the baby shower.

These include the following;

A party for any occasion can never do without balloons. These can come in various colors, sizes and shapes and are quite affordable. One can order these either online or in the nearest party store in the neighborhood and have it ready for pickup or delivery in a few days.

A nice looking cake is another important thing that must not be missed out for a baby shower. Just like balloons, this can be made in various colors or shapes symbolizing a cartoon character or any other thing that is the theme of the party.

A baby shower should always have games. When there are games, there are prizes and the host can get some gift certificates to be given away.

The party can be formal or it can be a casual one where people who are a bit older have a chance to act like children again. Party ware is available in various colors. One can get it at an affordable price which includes everything from the glass, to the utensils and the plate itself. Since these are disposable, one can easily get rid of it when the party is over.

Streamers and ribbons for the party are also an essential to fix up the venue for baby shower. These come in rolls more than 50 feet long and can be purchased at a reasonable price.

Light and finger foods are usually served during baby showers so it wont be that hard figuring out what snacks to get for the event.

The host can even make a baby shower registry so that the future mother will not get similar gifts from friends and family.

Given that most baby showers are limited to a small number of people, planning the budget before going out and buying the essentials will not be that much of a problem.

If one does not have enough time and is busy with other things such as work, one can enlist the help of friends and divide the labor or get the assistance of professional. Most people who do this for a living offer packages reducing the worry of some who have not done this before.

For a brand new mommy, or even a seasoned one, dealing with a colicky baby can be overwhelming. The constant crying is heartbreaking and nerve wracking, and leaves you with a sense of helplessness. But dont lose heart; the only good thing I can tell you about colic is that its temporary. Here are a few ideas to keep you going.

First Be sure its really colic. If you havent had the little one checked out by a doctor, do so. Sometimes whats written off as colic is really a milk allergy or some other true gastric disorder, like acid reflux. If the baby is on formula, you should ask if making a change in brand might help.

Secondly, get help! If you have to deal with the colicky symptoms all by yourself every day, youre bound to go nuts. Swap off with your spouse, another family member or a friend. My daughter had colic for the two longest weeks of my life, and it began every evening around 5:00pm. My husband and I took turns making dinner and eating with our other children while the other took care of the baby. It kept each of us somewhat sane to have a normal evening every other night, plus our other children didnt feel so neglected.

Next, try some of those tricks everybody tells you about. A lot of them really do work! Take the baby for a drive (this worked wonders with my daughter). Vacuum, play music or sit with the baby on the washing machine during the spin cycle! Try to take the babys mind off her misery. For some babies a warm bath and a rock in the rocking chair is helpful. I dont personally recommend the crying it out method for colic. Your baby is truly in pain and needs comfort during this time, and letting her cry for a long time will probably only escalate the situation. Mylicon Drops, an over the counter gas medication, might relieve symptoms on some babies. Its perfectly safe, so its definitely worth a try. Otherwise, dont medicate unless its something your doctor has told you to use. Ive heard of moms giving the baby something to make them sleep. This is terribly unsafe.

Finally, if the colicky symptoms havent subsided within a few weeks, make a return trip to the doctor, just to be sure nothing has changed. Colic is a temporary condition, so just bear with it and look forward to better times.

New parents are full of concerns about what regular household activities may pose a threat or present problems for their newest family member. At some point the question about the best ways to wash baby clothing will arise. Parents typically ask whether there is a certain type off detergent that they should use, whether it is safe to wash baby clothes with the rest of the family’s clothing and what special steps should be taken with cloth diapers if they are being used.

Detergent

This is a valid concern. It is not atypical for certain detergents to irritate the skin of adults and older children, so it is certainly feasible that a baby’s tender and sensitive skin can be easily irritated by harsh detergents. There are several detergents on the market that are supposedly intended for baby’s clothing, but there is not much difference between them and other mild detergents. The best choice for parents to make in this area is to purchase mild detergent that is free from added colors and fragrances and wash the clothing in that. If the baby does develop a rash or seems to be experiencing skin discomfort of any kind, the first thing to do is consult the family pediatrician. The doctor may simply recommend that a different detergent be used, but will also be able to determine if there is a more serious problem.

Washing Baby Clothes with Family Clothes

Some parents feel that the baby’s clothing needs to be washed separately from that of the rest of the family. The rationale for this is that the other family members’ clothing could somehow taint or contaminate the baby’s. There is no reason to worry about this and it is perfectly safe to wash baby’s clothes and bedding along with everyone else’s. The exception to this rule is cloth diapers. If parents are using cloth diapers and washing them at home rather than using a diaper service, they must be washed apart from everything else.

Cloth Diapers

Cloth diapers are fading into memory, replaced by the more convenient disposable brands that are on the market. For families that choose to use these, however, there are some special considerations. The most sanitary way to utilize reusable cloth diapers is to contract a diaper service. This will take away the hassle of washing the diapers at home and ensure that the replacement diapers are sterile. For families that choose to wash at home, the previous paragraph details that they should be kept separate from all other laundry. Storing the diapers until wash time must be done as sanitarily as possible. This means rinsing the cloth diaper in the toilet to remove solid wastes, then storing it in a pail until it is time to be washed. The pail should be covered to prevent odor and lined with a disposable or washable liner. The pail, lid, and liner should be cleaned whenever the diapers are and the soiled diapers should be washed at least twice weekly.

There is nothing more important in the world than the safety of your child. It is a given that you will worry about your newborn at night, when you are out, even if he/she is at home with a baby sitter or another family member. But there is no need to worry because there is a simple, affordable solution to your problem. Use a baby monitor! This is a wonder device that comes in many different configurations that will ensure you can keep tabs on all the activities of your baby. So what exactly is a baby monitor?

Basically, a baby monitor is a device that monitors the activities of the baby while you are otherwise occupied. There are audio and audio-visual baby monitors as well as specialized ones that can even sense the body movements of the baby. These baby monitors are available in many brands and models, but it is advisable to buy only the best quality you can afford to ensure accuracy and reliability. There are certain points that you must keep in mind before choosing a baby monitor.

Look for the following features before buying the baby monitor:

1) There are two types of baby monitors, wireless and plug-in. It is recommended that you buy the wireless one, as this one ensures mobility and freedom to use outside of the house. If you buy the wireless baby monitor, you get more flexibility and you are not stuck to only one location. Also, you can take it out with you in the range specified and monitor the activities of your baby while finishing your other chores.

2) Make sure the size of the baby monitor that you buy is not too large. Get a smaller size so that it can be easily clipped or tied to your belt. The portable baby monitors usually come with belt-clips. Size does not factor in much when the goal is to have a clear picture when buying a baby monitor that includes video. These audio-visual baby monitors are usually more bulky.

3) Instead of getting an audio-only baby monitor, it is better to go for a baby monitor with a camera, so you can actually visualize your baby’s activities. These come either black & white or color (usually color costs more). Picture quality varies, especially in low-light conditions. Since your baby is probably going to be sleeping in a darkened room, check that the low-light picture quality is sufficient.

4) Make sure that the microphone that is attached to the camera is ultra sensitive so that you can even hear a pin drop. This is of utmost importance, even more so than the quality of the picture display.

5) Check whether the monitor has other accessories like an alarm clock to remind you of the baby’s feeding times.

6) It is important that your baby monitor has a good range so that you will be able to travel a longer distance and yet keep a check on the activities of your baby.

7) Rechargeable batteries are a must. It’s best if the baby monitor has a low battery indicator.
Buy a baby monitor with multiple channels so you can choose an interference-free channel to transmit on. If your neighbor has a baby monitor, buy a brand that is different from his to ensure that the signals don’t get mixed up. Depending on the frequency of other household appliances such as cordless phones and wireless internet routers, you may need to buy a baby monitor that operates in the frequency zone different from your phone or router.

9) Some more expensive models include motion sensors that can detect if the baby has stopped moving for a period of time in order to prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). For the ultimate peace of mind, get a baby monitor with this feature.

9) Last but not least, check the UL (Underwriters Labs) mark before buying. This ensures UL evaluation for safety.

Apart from these features, you should also utilize recommendations on the performance of the baby monitor from published reports and user comments. This is more important than going by the brand name since some manufacturers produce different models that perform better than others in their product line. Do not focus solely on the cost. Keep in mind the quality. Generally, the baby monitors will start from about 30 to 40 dollars and can go up to 150 dollars or more.

Do yourself a favor and buy the best quality baby monitor you can with the most features.

How To Find Out If Your Child Is Doing Drugs – Home Drug Testing Kits

Are you concerned that your son, daughter, or family member is doing drugs? Is the prospect of having to bring them to a clinic too horrible for you to even contemplate? You should take time to consider another option. Why not try home drug-testing as an alternative?

1. Why Home Drug Testing?

Looking at it from an objective point of view, home drug-testing provides a lot of advantages for people who value their privacy among other things. It is also cheaper to buy a do-it-yourself drug testing kit than to go to a drug testing facility and have the examination there. It is less hassle and less worry on your part. It provides anonimity that keeps the sense of privacy surrounding your family intact.

2. Choose Wisely

There are a lot of do-it-yourself drug test kits available in the market today. Some examples of these tests include: urine tests, blood tests, saliva drug tests, etc. By knowing beforehand what kind of test you are pondering to take, you will save on your precious time. The most effective type of drug testing kit is actually the hair testing kit. This can tell you not only if your child has drugs in their system at the time of the test, but over the entirety of the past four months as well!

3. What Can Drug Tests Detect?

- Amphetamines
- Barbiturates
- Cocaine
- Marijuana
- Methamphetamines
- Opiates

These multi-drug tests are very handy as they will screen your loved ones for a wide range of drugs, not just Marijuana. You no longer need to buy a single tester for every type of drug that you fear your children might using. These pose savings for you and again, less hassle.

4. Talk Openly With Your Children

It is critical that you talk openly with your children during the testing process. Let them know that you are doing this because you care so much about them. If you are especially quiet, you can perform a drug test on your child or loved one while they are sleeping – simply clip approximately 40 hairs from them approximately one and one-half inches from the base of their root, and this will suffice for the very effective hair drug test kit. Often, children will be rebellious and feel a lack of trust if you bring up the subject of having a drug test conducted. Let them know that regardless of the result, the main objective isn’t to make things harder on them, but to simply put your mind at ease.

5. Use The Internet

There are are countless websites and companies that offer home drug-testing kits. Look and compare. Find out if there are reviews for the testing kit you are considering to buy. This will be beneficial on your part since you will be able to learn more about the product you are planning to buy as well as comparisons with other products out in the market. Your choices will increase and you will be able to buy the best the market has to offer.
