Tips For Selecting A Good Day Care

Posted by admin

Selecting a daycare is one of the most important decisions youll make before returning to the workforce.

Why? The center you choose will ultimately be responsible for your childs well being and safety the 5-9 hours a day they are left in the care of the center.

Whether you are looking for a home child care provider or an official daycare center, there are several things you should keep in mind before signing your children up for care.

Location first and foremost, you have to decide where you would like to have your child cared for. This could be in a center close to your home, your job, or you may even prefer care in your home. Once you have decided on location you can start investigating the available centers or providers in that area.

Ask for References Ask your friends and other family members with children for references about good daycare centers. These are often the most reliable source of information about daycare.

Interview Daycare Staff Never place your child in a daycare center without first meeting the staff. Make a point to meet the director and the caregivers that will be looking over your little one. Feel free to ask them questions about their standards, disciplinary procedures, sleep and even feeding routines. You should be looking for staff members that are enthusiastic, dedicated, warm and caring. Their love of children should be evident in everything that they do. If you are not comfortable with the staff, look somewhere else.

Check References As we mentioned you should check with your family and friends for references to a decent day care center. You should also ask the center for a list of references you can call to confirm their qualifications. One thing you might also inquire about is staff turn over. The higher the rate of turn over the more likely there is to be trouble.

Remember that a good day care center will have a clean environment, a good reputation, solid rules and a curriculum that includes lots of playtime, physical activity, learning activities and even quiet time.

When determining whether a daycare is good or not, also keep in mind staff ratios. Generally for babies the ratio should be one caregiver for every three children when there are six infants and one for every four if there are eight.

For toddlers aged 12-24 months the ratio is usually 1:3 for six children, 1:5 for ten and 1:4 for 12.

Check to see if the ratio falls within recommended guidelines but is also acceptable to you.

You should also make sure that the daycare facility is operating using a valid non-expired license. You can check to see if a license is valid by calling your local social services department.

The Positive Influence of Being Involved in your Child’s Education
It has been shown many times over in research studies that a parent who is involved in their child’s education has a positive impact. It’s reflected in improved grades and test scores, strong attendance, a higher rate of homework completion, higher graduation rates, improved attitudes and behaviors in the child, as well as the child being more likely to become involved in positive extra-curricular activities. Send out the message early in your child’s education that your home is an involved and active supporter of their learning.
Probably the most important element of a positive learning environment at home is structure. But what is too little or too much? If we’re too lenient or expect too little, your child may become disorganized or unmotivated. If we’re too rigid and strict, it can cause undue pressure or cause your child to feel unable to deliver on your expectations.
So what’s the best way to meet in the middle and create a positive learning environment for your child at home?
Help your child develop a work area where they can study and focus without being interrupted. Children usually do better when they have a private study area away from interruption. If your child prefers doing their work at the kitchen table, make sure other family members understand the kitchen is off-limits during study time. Make sure your child has plenty of supplies and reference materials available and that the area has plenty of light. Regardless of its location, ensure the area is quiet and that your child can study and work uninterrupted.
Agree on a regular time for studying. To help your child make homework a habit, schedule a set time each day for homework. Perhaps breaking study time up into smaller increments would work better for your child than one solid period. Work with your child to find out what works best for them. In addition, be sure your child has a sufficient break between the time they arrive home from school before they sit down to work in order to ‘decompress’ from their school day.
Help your child develop a method of keeping track of homework assignments. This can be a difficult chore for some students. Developing a successful way of keeping track of assignments then scratching them off as completed helps them develop a productive method for accomplishing tasks later in life.
Develop a positive line of communication with your child’s teacher. Teachers are usually very willing and excited to work with an involved parent to help the child’s overall success in school. Whether it’s notes sent back and forth in your child’s backpack or an e-mail correspondence, make sure your teacher knows your open for suggestions as how to better assist them in the homework and study process at home.

Teach Your Children About Money

Posted by admin

I firmly believe that if we’d been taught more about investing and basic money management in high school (and younger!) my generation wouldn’t have some of the financial troubles that they do. I was lucky enough to have parents who taught me those lessons at home, but many of my friends weren’t so lucky. I don’t think much has changed for our own children. The schools just don’t have the time or resources to focus on basic money skills so it’s up to us as parents to educate our children.
We have to teach by example. If our children see us spending money on credit cards they think that the little plastic card is all you need to get your hearts desire. We need to show them that the little plastic card produces a bill each month that must be paid. Pay it in full so they can learn the habit early.

Some people are hesitant (or refuse) to involve their children in their financial affairs. Up to a certain age I would agree. But at some point you need to involve your children at least a little bit so they can learn the process of money management and it will help keep you accountable for your actions. Having to explain your frivolous purchases to your children can quickly alter your own habits.

Your ultimate goal is for your children to be better off than you are. If you dont teach them about how to manage money they could easily become worse off in their adult years. Dont burden them with ignorance. If you dont feel qualified to show them proper money handling skills then enlist the help of qualified professionals or family members who are skilled with money. The goal is not perfection. Its basic education and hopefully preventing the already catastrophic credit card debt from spilling over into the next generation.

My favorite example of teaching money management within the home was setup by the Dilley family. They had sextuplets several years ago and learned a way to teach their children good behavior and money management at the same time. The kids earn Dilley Dollars for doing their chores and good behavior. The dollars are redeemable for video game time or can be converted to real money (50 cents real money for every Dilley Dollar) which can spent on real things. The kids are taught to save some of it and they learn to appreciate what it takes to make money in this world.

Whatever system you come up with, stick with it. Make your children accountable for their own spending habits and be accountable to them for your decisions. Admit your mistakes and do your best to lead them down the right financial path. Stick with the consequences of poor judgment. Of course you are the parent and make the final decisions, but the more you can involve them in the money processes of your household the better off theyll be when they step into the real world on their own.

Redefining The Notion Of ” Super Mom”-All You Need Is Love

Every day as I watch my three children grow, I reflect on my most important career choice-the day I became a mom. Like other women, I’ve struggled to balance work, life, home and family, but the good news is there is a solution.

First is to forget trying to be a “Super Mom.” These are moms who try to be all things to all people and come up short in the process. Today’s moms have learned to prioritize, focusing not only on our families but on taking care of ourselves. Our lives come in seasons, and I find that when I’m stretched too thin, I’m not effective at anything. Taking time for myself is a win-win for everybody.

As moms, once we have our priorities in line, we can then be more productive in all areas of our lives. For me, these include my faith, my family and then of being of service through volunteer work. I think we can have it all, just not all at once.

To find out more about how moms balance their busy lives, Sharpie, a trusted mom tool, surveyed moms and found that 95 percent of us agree that taking time for ourselves makes us a better mother. Still, 44 percent said that spending time with their family is the best stress relief.

The survey also identified a new breed of mothers-”Signature Moms.” These are moms who have their own way of parenting and expressing love to their children-whether it’s by volunteering at school, attending extracurricular games and activities or taking a much-deserved mom break.

To celebrate today’s Signature Moms and help set priorities, here are some simple things moms can do to keep love at the forefront of their family relationships. These “10 easy ways to say I love you” have helped me daily, and I hope they will do the same for you.

1. Slip a handmade valentine or a simple note into your child’s lunch box.

2. Take a walk together in the woods or your favorite park.

3. Jot down a line from your favorite poem. Share it with family members.

4. Kiss your kids good night, but also every chance you get.

5. Read a chapter book together.

6. Make it a priority to have family dinnertime together-no matter how busy the schedule.

7. Turn off the TV. Have a pizza night and watch a movie together.

8. Have a picnic in the park after the soccer game, instead of stopping for a fast meal on the way home.

9. Have each family member write down one reason why they appreciate each other. Write your reasons on a tag and use ribbon to attach them to a batch of your favorite cookies. Let every family member find his/her own special cookies.

10. Help your kids write a letter to a family member who lives far away. Write the first few lines of a story and instruct the recipient to write the next, and then return the letter. Your story can continue indefinitely.

Quiet Time For Parents

Posted by admin

OK, so that title sounds like a pipe dream for a lot of parents. You’re probably busy taking care of your children all day, and if they’re too small for school you don’t get that break. But there are still ways to get some quiet time.

One way is to have your spouse take the kids for a day. If your spouse works outside the home while you stay home with the kids, that doesn’t mean you deserve a seven day workweek every week. Come to an agreement about when you can have time for yourself. The amount and frequency will of necessity depend on the hours your spouse works. If your spouse or significant other is working two jobs to keep you home with the kids, you can’t expect him to give up his one day off too often so you can go relax. Keep it fair to both of you.

If that simply cannot work for you, no matter the reason, try making arrangements with a friend. Trade babysitting in the middle of the day if you’re both at home. The kids will get to play with each other, and you’ll get a break without spending money on a sitter. Make sure you do the same for your friend. You may also be able to make arrangements with family members.

Another option is to take time after the kids are all in bed and asleep. Even a half hour soaking in a bubble bath can work wonders for frayed nerves. Set up your bath in whatever way you find to be most relaxing – candles, music, books, etc.

Sometimes, of course, the need for time for yourself will hit in the middle of the day when no one is available to help. What you do then will depend on the age of your children.

If you have an infant, there just isn’t too much you can do. If they’ve been crying enough to get to you, you may have to walk out of the room for a few minutes, but make sure the room is a safe one first and do not go far. Take a few deep breaths and relax.

If you find that isn’t working, it may be time for a change of scenery with your infant. Go for a walk, sit in the back yard, just get out of the house for a while. You may not even have to drive to find a better place to enjoy your infant. Just remember, they are infants for a short time only, and while it may be dragging now, it will later seem to have flown by. Enjoy it as best you can.

As children become toddlers, it becomes more difficult in some ways to get quiet time when you just need a break. You have to create a much safer area for them to play and ensure they stay there. For some children, their bedroom is simply ideal for this situation. A childproofed bedroom with some special toys can keep a toddler busy for some time.

Older children, can, of course, be sent outside to play when you need a break, weather permitting. It’s not only a good breather for you as a parent, it gets them away from the TV and video games and into some exercise. How much you need to supervise them will of course depend on their ages and your comfort level.

It may not take a huge break from your children to make you feel much better and more relaxed. If the stress of parenting is getting to you, take some time for yourself, get relaxed and think about why you are getting stressed. You might just come up with a solution for your family.

Some Reasons That A Baby May Cry

Posted by admin

Crying is normal in the lives of babies. When a baby is born, the first thing they do is cry. With the first cry, he will experience air in his lungs for the first time. If the baby doesnt cry after delivery then crying should be initiated by slightly pinching or gently stroking the feet. A healthy baby should cry and it is a normal physiological event, even though it can upset the mother or family members.

We all know that babies can’t tell us what they need or if they are having trouble. The only way for him to communicate is for them to cry. Babies will show signs like kicking their feet, waving their hands and turning their head, but the best way for them to get some ones attention is to cry.

Excessive crying does not have an exact definition because crying habits changes from one baby to the next and some babies can be calmed easier than others. If crying is upsetting for the mother, it may be called excessive. Many times a baby will become quiet by giving him some breast milk or by carrying and gently rocking. Sudden, excessive crying means a baby is distressed and needs your attention. The cause of crying varies from simple reasons to life threatening conditions. So a crying baby should not be ignored. Most of the time it is difficult to diagnose why they are crying. Here are some common causes.

Common reasons for crying:

1 – Hunger: – A hungry baby will cry until he gets some milk.

2 – A Wet Diaper: – Urination and defecation will cause some discomfort and results in crying until their parts are cleaned and made dry.

3 Being Lonely: – The majority of Babies need somebody near them. They will cry if they are lonely. Even if their favorite toy falls from reach they will cry for help.

4 – Tired: – When the baby is tired after a journey and unable to sleep, they may just simply cry. Being in uncomfortable surroundings or in an unhealthy climate will make them feel tired.

5 Hot or Cold Conditions: – If a baby feels too hot or too cold, they will become restless and start to cry. Babies are most comfortable in a room with good ventilation.

6 – Tight Clothing: – Tight clothing in warm conditions can be intolerable for kids. The tight elastic of a dress can produce soreness and discomfort.

7 – Darkness: – When the baby wakes up they need some dim light. If there is darkness he will start crying. He will also be irritated with a strong light.

8 – Mosquito: – These creatures will disturb a babys sleep by biting them, causing them to cry.

9 – Nasal blocking: – Babies may not be able to sleep when they have a cold and will continue crying till the nasal passage is clear.
10 – Phlegm in the throat: – This also makes it difficult to breathe and results in crying.

11 – General Body aches: – General body aches with restlessness as seen in flu and stages of some infectious diseases can result in crying.

12 – Habitual cry: – Some babies cry without any real reason which can drive the parents crazy trying to figure out whats wrong. Many times a doctor will be called in for help.

13 – Nappy rash: – A tight and wet nappy kept for a long time can cause this condition.
A rash can also be due to an allergic reaction to the elastic material of the nappy. A rash causes soreness and baby will become sleepless and begin to cry.

14 – Earache: – Ear infections are very common in wet climates. The infection may spread from the throat. Ear infection can result in the rupture of the ear drum which will cause a discharge of pus. This usually gets worse at night while lying down. A child will become restless and cry. They may not allow you to touch the ear.

15 – Colic: – When a baby cries continuously, most people blame this on colic. This problem is still a topic for debate because exact cause for colic is not known and diagnosis is also difficult to confirm. Colic may be associated with rumbling and distention of the abdomen. Babies often feel better when lying on the abdomen. Some children may not allow you to touch the abdomen. If the child cries continuously a doctor, help is needed.

16 – Infections: – All infections cause some kind of pain or irritation which will make a baby cry. Infections can be anywhere in the body and usually will cause fever, redness and swelling.

17 – Reactions to certain food – Some foods produce allergic reactions. Allergies usually show signs of redness, breathlessness, gastric symptoms and continuous cry.

18 – Hard stools: – Constipated babies with hard stools may cry when they get the urge to defecate and may hesitate to pass stools because of pain.

19 – Gastro esophageal reflex: – Here babies cry with spilling of food after feeding. If this continues, it may be due to gastro esophageal reflex. This is due to failure of the lower part of an esophagus to close after food causing regurgitation from the stomach. It is difficult to diagnose this condition and can be confirmed by giving anti reflex medicines.

20 – Detrition: – During Detrition children becomes restless with crying. Often associated with gastric troubles and diarrhea.

These are just some of the reasons that a baby might cry. Hopefully these tips will help in diagnosing why they are crying. If crying persists, it is recommended that you contact your doctor immediately.

Productive and Positive Potty Training
Your child’s showing all the signs of being ready to potty train. That’s great! But now, where do you start?
Explain to your toddler that going potty is a normal process of life and everyone does it, even animals. Talk with them about the toilet, a special place where they can potty just like the big kids. Tell him how the potty works and let him try flushing himself. Explain that they will be wearing underwear and not diapers. Find some educational and entertaining videos of their favorite characters learning to go potty. Be sure to involve other family members in the process and emphasize the importance of consistency during this process.
Make a special trip to the store and purchase new underwear with your toddler. Let them have a voice in what you get. The underwear will have much more significance if your toddler helped choose them.
Overalls, pants with lots of buttons, snaps or zips, tight or restrictive clothing and oversized shirts will all be an obstacle to your child during this process. Put these kinds of clothes away for the time being.
Decide whether or not you’re going to use pull-ups, training pants or regular underwear and try to stick with this decision so your child has consistency and isn’t confused. Think about whether or not you want to use rewards or not. Figure out a strategy on how to handle potty issues when you’re away from home.
If your child is in child care, ask your provider for their advice and make sure there aren’t any hard and fast rules the center or caregiver has in place that may be an issue. Let them know that you’re going to start and enlist their help with the process.
Praise your child for each successful trip to the potty, and comfort them when accidents happen and try to remain patient and calm when they do. Avoid using candy or other treats as reinforcement. Let them know that it will take a while to get the hang of using the potty, and encourage and praise each attempt they make. With consistency, encouragement and praise, they’ll soon be completely trained.

Planning A Baby Shower: Surefire Tips For Making Your Shower A Success

Planning a baby shower can be an extremely fun and rewarding experience, however it is important to know the do’s and don’ts of organizing showers before you get started. Today’s baby showers are becoming more of a highly-organized event than they were in the past and this article will get you up to speed.

Baby showers can make an expectant mother feel more secure in the fact that her friends are all pulling for her and giving moral and financial support. Usually the baby shower is organized by non-relatives. But today, there is isnt abnormal to find family members, support group members, church friends and pretty much anyone except the expecting mother.

Inviting the Guests
Who should you invite? Usually, the guest list will only include those nearest and dearest to the expectant mother. It wouldnt hurt if she gets a first look at the guest list so that she can suggest who should be invited. If you are planning a surprise baby shower, you will have to do a little research on who should be attending instead of running the list through the expectant mother.

If the child is not a firstborn, you may opt to keep the number of guests down to the closest to the mother. Firstborn baby showers tend to have a larger guest list since it is, after all, the mothers first time.

The thing to remember is that the nature of baby showers is intimacy. So, for any baby shower party, try making the gathering one of intimate friends.

You could use informal ways to invite these guests: email, phone and others. Invitation cards and other letters are the best way, however, as they provide a tangible, traceable evidence of invitation. Plus, it is the most sure and formal way to invite a person and in many cultures the only way.

What About the Guys
The nature of the party is probably going to tend towards the feminine side; if the organizers of the party have a provision for this, then inviting men would be fine. It also depends on the men, since the party may dwell on topics such as pregnancy, children, and other motherly topics, they might not be that excited to join. All in all, it depends on the preference of the organizers.

Venue
Anywhere! As long as it can keep with the placid and fun nature of the occasion, any place would be fine. The more usual places on baby shower lists are backyards, formal halls, restaurants, and basically any room that has the amenities to make a baby shower successful. Just make sure the venue is not crowded and stressful to the mother-to-be. It also pays to make sure the venue is set long before the actual baby shower happens.

When to Throw a Baby Shower
Usually this is one or two months before her due. The baby shower is the perfect time to get your friend baby needs and stuff she may not have had time to purchase yet. It has to be well-timed though not too close to the due date, and not to far as to whittle down the excitement.

Baby showers are a pleasant surprise to expecting mothers. It takes a lot of the stress of expecting a child off of their minds and provides a means for friends to show support and concern (and of course, baby gifts) to expecting friends.

A properly coordinated baby shower will be greatly appreciated and forever remembered by mothers long after they have delivered their children.
