Retro Baby Clothing

Posted by admin

If it was cool when you were a kid, its cool for your kids!

Baby clothing is quite a bit different today than it was when you were an infant. From the designer styles of Baby Dior and Baby Phat to the bizarre offerings of the alternative baby clothing market, theres now something for every parent to adorn her children with in an effort to transfer a bit of her own personality onto her offspring. One of the latest trends in baby fashions is the retro look in baby wear.

Retro baby clothing indicates baby sized tees and Onesies that have been printed or screened with images of pop culture past. In many cases the pictures are of icons from before even the parents time, making it cool to be the most obscure. Interested parties are not likely to find these offerings at the local Wal-Mart but will instead have to order them online. Fortunately for those interested in giving their children a little piece of the past to wear on their chests, there is no shortage of those sites available.

The most complete and probably best known of these sites is The Retro Baby. Perusing the offerings of the site is like a walk down memory lane for anyone who is in their thirties or has a keen fix on the pop-culture of the 1980s. Designs available here include television references like The A Team, ALF, CHiPs, and Dallas (the Dallas print will be instantly familiar to anyone who remembers the summer that America was wondering who shot J.R.) as well as older images from shows that the parents of today watched in reruns while growing up: Barbara Eden in her silky outfit from I Dream of Jeanie and Clayton Moore in his blue Texas Ranger outfit complete with black mask from The Lone Ranger. Prices for these printed Onesies are a bit steep at $14.95 ($16.95 for toddler-sized tees) considering the baby will grow out of them completely in a few months time, but even the most stoic of thirty-somethings will have to admit that they are getting a certain dose of cool for their cash.

Retro doesnt just mean pop culture references, however. Several clothiers are offering styles that are a clear throwback to those worn by kids in the fifties, sixties, and seventies. One such company, Cakewalk Baby, offers flower print designs reminiscent of the post-hippie era of the late seventies; a time when PC meant petty cash, Elvis Presley was still with us, and no one knew what a video game or MTV was. A website called Milena Bee offers these designs and more and is definitely worth a look.

Whether you want to put stills of Bruce Lee from Enter the Dragon or flowery designs from an era gone by on your babys body, retro baby clothes may be just what you need to show the world that your baby is cooler than cool. Look hard enough and you may be able to find a tee shirt that says Im the Fonz or Frankie Say Relax.

Traditional, Classic, And Old World Baby Clothing Dressing Your Baby The Old-School Way

In todays world there are nearly as many styles in baby clothing as there are babies crawling about. Parents who want modern clothing can find it at the nearest Wal-Mart, those who desire alternative forms of clothing for their babies can usually find it online, some people make their baby clothing by hand, cutting cloth and sewing together designs from patterns purchased at the nearest Hancock Fabrics location. The choices are nearly limitless and include styles and designs too numerous to mention completely.

Like in other areas of the fashion world, baby clothes designs never really die, they go in and out of style according to the whims of the populace which, in the case of baby clothes, means the whims of the parents. Right now one of those whims is leaning toward retro clothing styles.

The term retro can mean a number of things, but often refers to pop culture of the recent past. While its true that styles influenced by the pop culture of the 1970s and 1980s are becoming popular, there is another retro movement taking place and it leans toward classic or old world baby clothing. Designs that were popular fifty, sixty, seventy, and up to a hundred years ago are gaining popularity with parents all over the country.

For baby boys, billowing rompers are selling from a number of specialty shops and websites from around the world to a largely American clientele, as are two piece short & shirt sets and old-style coveralls. Classic designs for girls include mostly flowing dresses and female counterparts to the boys rompers.

Most of these designs can not be found in the average American store and many come from Europe and must be purchased online or by mail order. The British web site Baby Classics offers these styles and more to their customers, so many of whom are in the US that the company saw fit to quote their prices in dollars as well as British pounds. The outfits are expensive by most baby clothing standards, costing about the same as some of the more extravagant designer outfits for babies, but have found an audience because of the cute appearance of the clothing as it is worn by the infants or toddlers.

These extremely retro baby fashions may not be for everyone because off their unique looks and hefty prices, but many parents are jumping onto this classic bandwagon and dressing their babies in the fashions of long ago. Due to the cost and the delicate fabrics you probably wont see a lot of these designs showing up at the local park for play dates, but dont be surprised if youre sitting in church or at some special occasion and see a baby dressed like shes living in the 1920s.

Easy Steps to choosing and creating a Traditional Baby Shower Gift

Gift Baskets

Gift baskets are something you can buy or make. If you want to save a little money, purchase a nice, inexpensive basket from Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, or other retail chains and then fill it with items like baby powder, lotion, diaper cream, washcloths, bibs, sleepers, bottles, teething ring, pacifiers, and so on.

For a nice, added touch, purchase a second basket for the parents. In this basket, add some crackers and cheese with sparkling grape juice, Godiva chocolates, bubble bath, gourmet coffee, homemade cookies or muffins, two movie tickets, and so on.

Knitting

Beautifully, hand knitted blankets, bonnets, jackets, and other gifts are always a welcomed gift. With this type of baby gift, it is apparent that the person put tremendous time and effort into making something special, something warm and cherished.

Shoe Bronzing

This continues to be a cherished tradition. Bronzed shoes could be given as a certificate for the couple to have done after the birth of the baby or this makes an excellent gift for adopted babies.

Today, more than 14 million baby shoes have been bronzed. While only shoes were bronzed at one time, today other baby items can be bronzed to include stuffed animals, pacifiers, baby bottles, etc.

First Tooth Holder

A timeless, silver-plated first tooth holder is something the soon-to-be parents would love. These holders can be engraved with the baby’s initials or name and some have a nice Plexiglas hinged lid to protect the precious tooth.

An alternative to this is the “First Curl” holder for the baby’s first haircut, as seen in the photograph to the right. Picture Frames

Couples always love cute picture frames, perfect for showing off the newest member of the family. You will find every design imaginable such as a pewter frame with a Noah’s Ark motif, ceramic frames with tiny bunnies or ducks, crystal frames, etc. With this type of gift, the theme of the nursery can be matched perfectly.

“Piggy” Bank

Although you could stay with tradition and go with a little piggy like the one shown, baby banks are available in all shapes, sizes, and designs. Something made from pewter or silver looks beautiful and will last for years, making it the perfect keepsake.

The opportunities for gifts are endless. The main thing is to think about what the parents will need for their newborn baby. Babies go through tons of diapers, crib sheets, bibs, sleepers, and socks so you would always be safe with any of these items.

Buying Baby Clothes Online

Posted by admin

Todays parents have more options available to them when it comes to finding and purchasing clothes and other items for their babies than ever before. With the advent of the internet, shopping for baby clothes has never been easier as there are numerous online retailers that can provide almost anything a parent needs. What follows are some of the best web sites for buying baby clothes online.

Discount Baby Clothes

Not surprisingly, some of the best physical discount stores that carry baby clothes are also some of the best online retailers. When looking for baby duds at an acceptable price the kings online are Wal-Mart, Target, and Kmart. Each company offers direct sales from their web site, have pretty much everything you could need in terms of baby clothing and layette needs, and offer it all at prices that wont make you spit up your Isomil formula. Each offers clearance items and baby registry services as well. Other good sites with slightly higher, but still mid-range, pricing belong to Old Navy and Lands End.

Designer Baby Clothes

For the parent that wants to dress little Kelly or Clay with a bit more pizzazz and who doesnt mind paying considerably more to do so there is E-Luxury, a site that offers the full line of Baby Dior products and the direct web sites of several other designers who deal in baby clothing. Baby Phat has their own site as does Anne Geddes who recently launched a line of her own baby wear based on her famous photographs. If youre looking to shop for as much as possible under one electronic roof there is Chic Baby Boutique, who carries most of the Mak the Yak and Baby Om clothing lines.

Let Your Browser do the Walking

There are literally hundreds of other web sites out there that offer baby clothes at all price ranges and designed to meet all specifications. If youre interested in organically grown cotton, theres a site that specializes in baby clothing made from those fibers. If you want punk rock designs on your babys T-shirts, there are sites that offer just that! There are sites that offer political slogans on baby sized clothing, alternative baby clothing, and sites for baby & toddler tuxedos and evening gowns. If you can imagine it, you can probably find it somewhere on the internet where there is someone just waiting to sell it to you.

There is nothing that will take your breath away faster or give you that punched in the stomach feeling than realizing your child is missing. Whether it is in a grocery store or in a mall, a parking lot in broad daylight or in a park or even at home all it takes is a moment’s distraction when it hits you-YOUR CHILD IS MISSING!

And that is all it takes is a split second of a distraction. The phone rings, you see someone you haven’t seen in a long time; the examples of distractions are almost endless.

Fortunately in MOST of these cases they have just wandered off and are easily found. But the pure unadulterated fear for those few moments-you won’t soon forget. Those are the lucky ones.

The unlucky ones are the ones where it turns into a missing child story. According to FBI missing child statistics a parent or caregiver calls law enforcement about a missing child 2100 times a day.

An uncommon example occurred nearby recently. Eight year old Evan Thompson was on his first camping trip in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains near Canon City, Colorado. He disappeared shortly after breakfast. He had no food or water with him and no medication for his Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Those mountains have snakes, cougars, and bears. After four days he was finally found and is okay.

How many times have you noticed the flyers in your local grocery store or Wal-Mart of pictures of missing children? Have you ever seen a milk carton or received a postcard with a photo of a missing child? Those are the unlucky ones and there are tens of thousands of them annually.

There are products available that can help in keeping track of your child. Especially for younger children this is a worthwhile investment. Don’t be caught off guard. Be alert, be aware, and be safe.

Among the many options for baby shower invitations is the do-it-yourself option. There are several ways to accomplish this:

Computer made

With the Use of graphics program found in your computer, simply make a design for a baby shower invitation then print it out onto card or board stock. With this option, you can send the invitation in an envelope or send without an envelope similar to a postcard. Be sure that your invitation will contain all the necessary details such as date, place, time, theme, who is it for, and the rsvp number. There are a lot of websites offering free invitations that can be printed.

Velum Overlay

One adorable but very simple way of making a baby shower invitation is by using a velum overlay. You can buy a paper style that attracts you; buy this along with a coordinating ribbon at your favorite craft or scrap booking store. Buy too, a few pieces of velum. Working on the computer, write down any wording that you would want to appear on your invitation then have it printed unto the velum. At the top or the front of a craft paper, fasten the velum. The result is a fun and fancy invitation that was also fun to do.

More invitation ideas:

1. The most practical and easy idea is to buy your ready made invitations at a store that specializes in it, fill up all the blanks then mail them.

2. You can order professional invitations in online stores or from a party store.

3. Make your own custom-generated invitation cards at any greeting card store; some offer computers wherein you can design your own invitations.

4. Make your own using a computer software or through Word or clip art or a blank or pre-printed invitation which you can acquire from Wal Mart, Michael’s, office supply stores, Hobby Lobby, etc.

5. Sending a postcard.

Invitation information:

1. A phrase or a poem that indicates a baby shower party or simply the words baby shower, to make certain that your guests is well informed what they are getting invited to.

2. Make sure to put the name of the mom to be.

3. Include the address as well as the directions and the map of the place where the party is to be held.

4. Date and time of the occasion.

5. Theme, if any

6. RSVP number or an email address

7. The name of the hostess.

8. Your store registry

Choosing an invitation:

1. Keep a budget, stick to always. The market for invitations is overwhelming. Only spend within your budget, do not get carried away.

2. Think of a theme and make certain that your invitation gives the guest a hint of it.

3. Make, purchase or have the baby shower invitation made at least a month in advance prior to the baby shower date.

4. Before selecting a certain design, as there are so many choices, go through each design carefully, pick out at least five that you like best, then from the five, pick out three, until you narrow down your choices to one.

5. Spend a lot of time browsing through the web. Here, a lot of invitations are available in different themes, sizes, colors, patterns and styles.

6. Know how many invitations to buy or order. Make a guest list before you order and make sure to order for extras.

Help Protect Your Child’s Vision From UV Rays and Eye Injuries

For children, sunshine and warm weather equal outdoor activity. For parents interested in their children’s eye health, it’s also the right time to get kids sunglasses and protective eyewear.

Many parents don’t think about getting sunglasses for their kids, but everyone is at risk for eye damage as a result of exposure to the sun. And children might be at a higher risk because their developing eyes may be less protected from the sun’s ultraviolet rays than those of adults.

Wearing sunglasses that block UV rays can help prevent eye problems such as cataracts and macular degeneration – two leading causes of blindness. Since UV damage is cumulative over a lifetime, it’s important for kids to start wearing sunglasses as early as possible to potentially minimize this damage.

Sunglasses must block 99 percent to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays to be effective. The darkness of the lens is not an effective indicator of how well the glasses protect eyes from UV light.

Consult an optometrist to choose the right sunglasses. They are the doctors who provide primary vision care, examining people’s eyes to diagnose vision problems and eye diseases.

Obtaining this expert advice can be as simple as visiting your local Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club Vision Center. Adjacent to each of the Vision Centers at these stores is an office staffed by knowledgeable, professional and licensed independent optometrists who can provide affordable and comprehensive eye examinations as well as prescriptions for glasses and contacts.

The American Optometric Association recommends comprehensive eye examinations by an eye doctor at 3 and 5 years of age for all children.

“Many children get a cursory eye check when they visit their pediatrician, but only an eye doctor is qualified to perform a comprehensive eye examination,” says Dr. Melissa Viker, an independent optometrist who practices next to a Wal-Mart Vision Center.

The optometrist can also offer guidance when it comes to eye protection. Annually there are more than 40,000 sports-related eye injuries – many to children. More than 90 percent of these injuries could be prevented by wearing proper eye protection, such as sports goggles, which are designed for impact resistance, unlike regular eye glasses that could break upon impact and possibly cause serious injury.

Eye protection should be worn during any sport that involves physical contact or a ball, bat, stick, racket or puck.

“A child’s vision is a precious commodity, but caring for it doesn’t have to be expensive,” says Viker. “Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club offer expert advice, low-cost examinations and a wide selection of affordable eyewear to help parents provide children with a lifetime of good eye care.”

Baby Formula Goes Organic

Posted by admin

Organic foods may finally get a seat at the kids’ table.

Seven out of 10 Americans said they prefer organic alternatives. It’s probably no surprise that many parents say they want to give their babies the benefits of an organic product when it comes to feeding them baby formula. However, the problem has been that until recently, there hasn’t been an organic formula available that provides babies with two key nutrients for mental and visual development: the lipids DHA and ARA.

The Role Of Nutrition

“These lipids are naturally supplied from mom to baby in breast milk, but in reality, not all moms can breast feed. If parents formula feed, and choose an organic infant formula, it’s essential that they use an organic formula enriched with DHA and ARA,” explains Dr. Barbara Levine, director of the Nutrition Information Center and associate professor of nutrition in clinical medicine at Weill College of Medicine of Cornell University.

The only nationally distributed organic baby formula with DHA and ARA is available at Wal-Mart and is called Parent’s Choice Organic Infant Formula, made by PBM Nutritionals. In addition to having the essential lipids, the formula is enriched with the same nutrients as other baby formulas and meets the strict infant formula guidelines set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Finding Affordable Formula

The formula helps parents looking for organic alternatives in a second way as well: It can save them some green. PBM got around the problem of high-priced organic foods by distributing its product nationally through Wal-Mart stores. Doing so allowed the manufacturer to reach many parents who did not have access to organic formulas-and to keep prices relatively low.
